Jiangxi Wuyuan and Poyanghu Birding Tour

Jiangxi borders Anhui to the north, Zhejiang to the northeast, Fujian to the east, Guangdong to the south, Hunan to the west, and Hubei to the northwest. It is a southern province of the People's Republic of China, spanning from the banks of the Yangtze River in the north into hillier areas in the south.

 

The Gan River dominates the province, flowing through the entire length of the province from south to north. It enters Lake Poyang in the north, the largest freshwater lake of China; that lake in turn empties into the Yangtze River, which forms part of the northern border of Jiangxi. Poyang Lake is Poyanghu in Chinese. It covers an area of 5000 more square kilometers. In winter time, When the water cover shrinks to 3000 less square kilometers. Most of the areas become grass land, with abundant waterweeds, It attracts thousands of migratory birds from Siberia come here to spend their winter time, including those species endangered or near extinction, such as the rare Scaly-sided Merganser, Black Stork, Oriental White Stork, Siberian Crane(White crane) and so on, Thus, the lake becomes the most popular destination for those bird watchers and bird researchers both from home and abroad. There are hundreds of birders from all over the world every year.

 

Wuyuan has long been regarded as 'the most beautiful countryside in China'. It attracts thousands of tourists come for a visit every year. Though, to most of the tourists who come to visit Wuyuan may only to see landscapes, countryside views and villages, few people know this place as an amazing place for birdwatching. There are approximately 370 birds species around this region, among which, you may surprise find the world wide almost extinct 'Blue-crowned Laughingthrush' which is separated from 'Yellow-throated Laughingthrush'. It is believed by Dr. He Fenqi (The Yellow-throated Laughingthrush Researcher) and other bird experts that the present existed numbers are only 200 approximately and only can be seen in Wuyuan. In the past people also found the species in Simao of Yunnan province and Assam of India.

Schedule:

Day 1 Arrive in Nanchang

Arrive in Nanchang, the capital city of Jiangxi province, meet with your bird watching guide and driver. When every customer reaches, and then we will drive towards Wuyuan(3.5 hours), a picturesque small town in the northeast of the province with a forest coverage of 80% of the total area and without many polluted industries. Wuyuan is the optimal inhabitants of many kinds of birds, there are approximately 370 bird species. This small remote county is known as one of the best birding destination in southeastern China.

 

Day 2 Wuyuan

Full day long bird watching around Wuyuan. you will have an early get-up at 5:30 while it is still dark, then drive 40 minutes (day time already at 6:20)to the first birding spot, which named Zhong Ping Village, is used to be a forestry farm with abundant seeds trees. You will spend the whole morning near this area. The target birds here include Grey-chinned Minivet, Black and Chestnut Bulbuls, Chinese Bulbuls, Collared Finchbill, Hwamei, Grey-sided Scimitar Babbler, Black-throated Tit, Japanese White-eye, Fork-tailed Sunbird and Tristram’s Bunting, Cabot's Tragopan and Elliot's Pheasant occasionally( not a reliable area for pheasant though).

And then we will drive to Taibai town for lunch. In the afternoon, drive back and towards another village named Kengkou for Scaly-sided Mergansers. the habitat for mergansers is only 3 kilometers far away from the village along the Le' An river, this spot is proved a very reliable one for mergansers, we constantly see them in recent years since 2008, though the total number is not many( 22, in 2008; 20,in 2009; 19, in 2010; 20, in 2011; 17, in 2012).then drive 10 minutes to the 3rd. spot for more forest birts: Chinese Bamboo Partridge, Grey-capped Woodpecker, Common Kingfisher, Oriental Turtle Dove, Long-tailed Shrike and Black-collared Starling etc. Then drive back to hotel for dinner before 5:30. It is dark already at 5:30 P.M. in winter Wuyuan.

      

Day 3 Wuyuan

Continuing your Bird watching trip in Wuyuan. Today's target birds are Cabot's Tragopan, Elliot's Pheasant, Mandarin duck, Little Egret, White-throated Kingfisher, Black-capped Kingfisher, Crested Kingfisher, Red-billed Blue Magpie, Yellow-rumped Flycatcher, White Wagtail and Pied Falconet etc. The first destination is Zhongyun town (40 minutes from hotel), you will spend the whole morning for pheasants here, then driving to Xiaoqi village for Pied Falconet, after that we will drive to  Wuyuan Yellow-throated Laughingthrush Small Nature Reserve, this reserve is a 8 square kilometers small island in the middle of the Wu river, the island shaped like a moon, the local people vividly named it "Moon Bay ". the reserve was built up to protect the habitat of the very endangered yellow-throated Laughingthrushes, the world total number were found only 200 more existed in Wuyuan.(This mysterious birds appears in late March and disappears in late May in Wuyuan every year, March, April and May are the breeding season for them).You may miss the chance to see this bird in winter time, but still be lucky here for Kingfishers, woodpeckers, mandarin ducks, Little Egrets...

 

Day 4 Wuyuan to Wucheng & Poyanghu

Today you will move to Wucheng town, which is a small remote island town in the west side of Poyang lake, where also the Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve locates, It takes 4.5 hours to reach there. In the afternoon, you will reach to Da Hu Chi reserve, Siberian Crane is undoubtedly the reserve's star attraction, over 95% of the world population (only 3000 more) of these splendid creatures winter here, as do even larger numbers of the equally majestic White-naped Crane, Hooded Crane and Oriental Storks. Besides large flocks of geese including Bean, Greater White-fronted and small numbers of Swan Geese, there are large flocks of Eurasian Spoonbills and Bewick's Swans, Common Cranes and numbers of Spotted Redshanks.

 

Day 5 Wucheng & Poyanghu

Today you will change your ride to boat, take a small fishing boat and exploring to Dahu Chi Lake(west side),Banghu Lake, Shahu Lake, Dacha Hu lake for Siberian Cranes and Oriental Storks, Tundra and Whooper Swans, Black-faced and Eurasian Spoonbills, Hooded and White-naped Cranes, Swan, Tundra, Taiga, Greater and Lesser White-fronted Geese, the rare Baer’s Pochard, Asian Yellow Rail, Pied Avocet, Spotted Redshank, Japanese Quail and Vinous-throated Parrotbill etc. Our guide will take the picnic luch for you, and you will spend all day long around the National Nature Reserve.

 

Day 6 Departure

After a final morning in Poyang lake, we'll return to Nanchang city. You will have a lunch at Nanchang city. Then the tour is ended. Welcome back any time.
